Overview

Located in the Aravalli ranges of Rajasthan, the city of Udaipur is situated at a distance of about 405 km from the state capital Jaipur. The city is well connected through air, rail, and road to other important cities of India like Jaipur, Delhi, and Mumbai.

Udaipur is a fascinating blend of sights, sound and experiences. Right from the medieval times, the city has been an inspiration for poets, painters and writers. Founded in 1559 and named after Maharana Udai Singh, Udaipur became the capital of the Sisodia dynasty whose earlier capital was Chittor. According to legend, the Maharana was out hunting one day when he met a holy man meditating on a hill overlooking the Lake Pichola. The hermit blessed the Maharana and told him to built a palace at that very spot, as it would be well protected. The Maharana followed the holy man”s advice and Udaipur came into being.

Today, Udaipur is a one of the better-known tourist destinations of India. Summers in Udaipur are quite hot with temperature going up to 38°C during the day. Winters are relatively pleasant with temperature remaining at around 28°C during day and up to 11°C during night. The winters are the best time to visit historic city.

Udaipur is located in north west part of India. It is also known as the city of palaces. Udaipur is ambianced by mountains, hills and glorious palaces. Udaipur was formed by Maharana Udai Singh in 1568. The temples and houses around the Lake Pichola make Udaipur an oasis of colours. Udaipur is well connected by rail, air.

How to reach

Air: Dabok airport is 25 km from city centre. There are Alliance Air (a wholly owned subsidiary of Indian Airlines) flights to Aurangabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur, and Jodhpur. Indian Airlines office is at Delhi gate and is open from 10 am to 1.15 and from 2 pm to 5 pm.

Road: Udaipur is on National Highway no. 8. The main bus stand is near railway line opposite Udai Pol. The Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) operate buses from Udaipur to Agra, Ahmedabad, Bharatpur, Bhopal, Bikaner, Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Mathura, Rajkot, Surat, Ujjain and Vadodara.

Rail: Railway station is 4 km from city centre. Direct train services are available for Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Delhi.

Tourist Places in Udaipur

1Lake Palace :

Lake Palace is one of major attractions in Udaipur. It is also known as Jag Niwas. It's a beautiful palace established by Maharana Jagat Singh II. This palace is structure by white marble that appears like blinking blue water on the lake.

2City Palace :

City palace is located on the delta of luxurious Lake Pichola. This complex has 11 beautiful mahals with towers and balconies.

3Jag Mandir :

Jag Mandir was formed by Maharaja Karan Singh. It's an island palace on Pichola lake. This mandir has sculpture of elephants with impressive cenotaphs.

4Saheliyon-ki-Bari :

Saheliyon-Ki-Bari is garden, established during the 18 century. Its popular for the fountains, lotus phool, marble pavilions and flowerbeds, provides a tantalizing view to tourists.

5Jagdish Temple :

Jagdish temple is most attractive temple in Udaipur. It was built by Maharaja Jagat Singh. This temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu, famous for its charming frescoes and castling shikara.

6Fateh Sagar :

Fateh Sagar is situated in the heartland of Saheliyok Ki- Bari garden. It was established by Maharaja Fateh Singh.

Ghanearo is 140 km away from the city Udaipur. It is well known for the life style of royalty.

4Nagda Town :

Nagda is small town of Madhya Pradesh. It was founded by Nagaditya.
